As part of the media coverage around the 40th anniversary of the Miners’ Strike, BBC Look North presenter Carol Malia visited the CRT Horden Hub House and joined their walking group to find out how Horden was faring four decades on from the strike.
Carol spoke to our volunteers Dave and Jimmy while they explained the important work they do in supporting our CRT Horden Hub House staff.
The walking group organised by our partners at Move Durham (part of Durham County Council) then set off led by Marko, who had created a special walking route to celebrate Horden’s mining heritage.
The group walked along the coast trail, past Horden’s mining wheel memorial and then through the Horden Welfare Park past the iconic Marra statue. Ray Lonsdale created the sculpture in 2015 of a nine foot tall miner with his heart ripped out to symbolise the destruction of mining communities such as Horden.
While on the walk, Carol spoke to regulars including Liz about life in Horden and the contribution made by the CRT Horden Hub House to the local community. The atmosphere was a celebration of the wonderful community spirit in Horden and enabled Horden to be shown in its best light before everyone returned to the CRT Horden Hub House for a cuppa and a chat.
The walking group with Move Durham sets off from the CRT Horden Hub House every Thursday at 1.30pm and normally takes around an hour and a half – including hot drinks and a chat at the end.
You can also watch BBC Look North in the North East & Cumbria region at 6.30pm each weekday evening on BBC One.
