The CRT Game On Home Internationals recently brought together football teams from across England, Scotland and Wales. This year was the 16th instalment of our CRT Game On showcase event and was held at City Football Academy in Manchester. The weekend was a great success, ending with a memorable tournament that celebrated community, sport and opportunity for young people. Boys teams from CRT Game On 5ives sessions and grassroots girls teams from coalfield areas came together to compete, with England represented by Dinnington 5ives, Knottingley 5ives, and Ackworth Girls; Scotland by Alloa 5ives, Dalmellington 5ives, and Dalkeith Thistle; and Wales by Porth 5ives, Ystradgynlais 5ives, and Tredegar Town AFC.
The support of Blue Marble Asset Management, Pennyquick Collins, and The Edward Cadbury Trust made the day possible, and the atmosphere was full of energy and positivity. In the girls' final, Central Girls Football Academy claimed victory against Tredegar Town AFC, while Dinnington 5ives triumphed in an all-England boys' final against Knottingley 5ives, winning a close match on penalties. Two players were recognised as ‘Players of the Tournament’, not only for their impressive ability on the pitch, but also their attitude towards the game, which perfectly reflected the values of CRT Game On.
The tournament wasn’t just about winning – it was about bringing people together. With 72 participants from across coalfield communities, supported excellently by coaches and volunteers, the event aimed to build social connections, increase physical activity, and inspire participants through the opportunity to play football at a world-class facility.
During the trophy ceremony, a special moment came when our CRT Game On programme managers presented Gary Ellis, who recently retired from his role of Chief Executive after 25 years at the CRT, with a framed Aston Villa shirt. It was a fitting tribute to honour Gary’s involvement in the event since it first began.
