This programme is for community and voluntary organisations which can clearly demonstrate that a grant will impact positively on people living in coalfield communities in Wales. Grants will be awarded for projects which can be completed within 12 months and can identify clear, positive and measurable outcomes.
Projects will need to meet one or more of our cross cutting themes of health and wellbeing, community cohesion, tackling poverty and/or tackling climate change. In addition, to be eligible for support from the Coalfields Community Grant Programme - Wales, we would expect your project to meet one or more of the following themes:

Areas Funded: The community asset must be based in or benefit people living in our eligible coalfield areas in Wales.

The aim of the funding is for the development of services for people affected by cancer in the Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board area (Merthyr Tydfil, Rhondda Cynon Taf and Bridgend valleys) where there is a clear evidence of need and clear, measurable outcomes.
The fund is responsive to various needs and supports both capital and revenue costs. Eligible applicants to include community and voluntary sector groups/organisations.
The fund is not intended to support personal costs but enable and test solutions to improve cancer outcomes and access to cancer support services at a local level.

The application process for the Breaking Barriers Fund has been designed to be as straightforward as possible. Simply submit an outline of your project idea(s) and proposed area(s) of operation via email to wales@coalfields-regen.org.uk and a member of our team will be in touch with you to help move your project idea forward.
Areas Funded: Coalfield areas within the Cwm Taf Morgannwg Health Board area of Merthyr Tydfil, Rhondda Cynon Taf and Bridgend valleys in Wales.
The aim of the grant is to get more people living in coalfield communities in Wales (ages 13 – 19) to play and stay in sport. Sport Wales statistics highlight an alarming drop off of registered players during these teenage years.

The work of the Coalfields Regeneration Trust in Scotland is paid for with a grant from the Scottish Government.

The CRT has teamed up with the WEA to promote adult learning in former coalmining communities. CRT Support’s fantastic network of members provide a breadth of activity in their communities and the WEA’s extensive range of accessible courses has the potential to develop new skills for their staff and volunteers but also for their service users and the wider community.
The Coalfields Regeneration Trust working in partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support launched CRT Together in March 2024, with a mission to make sure no one faces cancer alone. CRT Together offers non-medical related support on emotional and practical matters through dedicated Link Workers signposting people with cancer to local support services and helping establish new services where there is a proven need.

Cranfield Trust has a 35-year history of delivering pro bono management support to frontline welfare organisations. For nine years, Cranfield Trust and Coalfields Regeneration Trust have worked together informally to identify organisations within coalfields communities that can benefit from our free support and services.
In that time, successful outcomes for client organisations include:
• significant funding wins, including multi-year grants, underpinned by robust business planning;
• increased collaboration between charities to improve cross-referrals;
• pooling of resources through strategic reviews of services; and,
• increased impact and more effective services for people living in coalfields communities through improved processes and systems.
